MBST® Therapy for low back pain

Treatment device

Chronic low back pain is a debilitating disorder with very little in the way of successful treatment options. Surgery has poor results and is fraught with dangers, and physiotherapy and analgesia alone often produce unsatisfactory results.

MBST® therapy now offers a successful alternative, improving patients' pain and allowing them to get on with their lives.

The evidence

A recently published double blind randomised controlled trial by Kullich and colleagues has clearly demonstrated the powerful effects of MBST® therapy in lower back pain. 62 patients were randomised to recieve either MBST® therapy or placebo treatment, along with an inpatient treatment regimen consiting of physiotherapy, massage and hydrotherapy. Patients were evaluated prior to treatment, and at 1 week and 3 months following treatment for pain score (visual analogue score; VAS) and disability (Roland & Morris disability index).

Treatment device

Whilst both the control and treatment groups showed improvement one week after treatment, the improvement was significantly greater in the group treated with MBST®. Furthermore, the improvement seen with MBST® therapy persisted to the 3 month follow-up assessment, an effect not seen in the placebo group. The most significant improvement in the MBST® group was in the RM questions regarding incapacities, such as sleep problems, fatigue, bending ability and the time required to get dressed.

This study clearly demonstrates a prolonged benefit with MBST® therapy when combined with an inpatient rehabilitation program for lower back pain.
